Living a quiet life rooted in God’s grace

What is a quiet life?

A quiet life, in my estimation, is a life that is surrendered to God’s plan and rooted in His grace. This is not a perfect life, but one lived out with intention. Seeking purpose, not a platform, but a position of servitude to God, our Father in heaven.

and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you
— 1 Thess 4:11 ESV

A quiet life includes minding your own business and working with your hands. When you are focused on God and his purposes, you don’t have as much idle time to be caught up in the snares of the world’s troubles. I’m not talking about walking in ignorance. I’m talking about intention and seeking God for guidance on how to serve and honor Him.

I used to think that I needed a large public platform to serve God, and sometimes I still desire that, but I have found joy and value in building relationships in my community. My journey toward living a quiet life in God has been fueled by believing that my life has purpose and, through that purpose, choosing to serve right where I am. I began praying for those in my direct sphere of influence; it doesn’t stroke my ego and fill that hole in my heart that whispers to me I’m insignificant ( I can deal with the insecurities in prayer and therapy), but it is a direct result of time spent in the Lord and the overflow of my life blessing others. I can actually see the impact!

When I share my life and connect with others at work or church, I get to see the work of the Holy Spirit. A quiet life does not equate to a silent life; I am actually learning to live more boldly. I am beginning to trust that God created me, as I am, for a purpose. I can see how my personality draws people to me. It can be through kindness or humor that people experience God in me.

It is with intention that I abstain from certain acts or behaviors. I am not perfect, but I take my public witness very seriously. I know that in all things Christ deserves to be glorified, and I do my best to live out my life as a witness to the goodness and fullness of God.

I am not perfect!

3 Tips to living “quietly”

  1. Trust God in every season of your life. Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us that for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under/heaven. 2 Timothy 4:2 reminds us to be ready in and out of season.

  2. Stay surrendered to God and His plan, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

  3. Live peaceably with others, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Romans 12:18 — If at all in your power, make peace with others and mind your own business. Only seeking the best for others.

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
— Romans 12:18
